About
the Alamogordo Speaker Series, beginnings.
The Alamogordo Speaker Series began as a collaboration of individuals and organizations in Alamogordo and around the Tularosa Basin to bring literary and culturally relevant speakers to Alamogordo.
The first annual event, held Friday March 19, 2010,was designed to honor, through history, the memory of the events of April 1942 when more than 76,000 men under American command surrendered to their Japanese captors. These captors then sent these malnourished men walking sixty-six miles, through a land of monkeys and snakes – where malaria and dysentery were endemic - to prison camps. This notorious walk, a metaphor for human brutality, became known as “The Bataan Death March.” The event was attended by over 400 people and we were honored to have 5 Bataan veterans on our stage.
