Alamogordo Speaker Series presents:
Bataan
The History - The Aftermath
On March 19th, the Alamogordo Speaker Series will host an event that looks at the Bataan Death March in a historical context. A panel of speakers - military experts, survivors, historians, and others - will discuss the Death March and its aftermath from a historical perspective and in terms of events taking place today. We hope to honor the memory of those who fought, died and survived the march, imprisonment and life afterward.

At the center of our event is the book Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and its Aftermath by Elizabeth & Michael Norman. This book, the product of 10 years of exhaustive research, has been cited by one noted historian as "the definitive work" on Bataan.
We hope you will join us!

Community Ed Course
In addition to our March 19th event, the Community Education program at NMSU-Alamogordo is offering the following course:
Tears in the Darkness: The Bataan Death March in Historical Context
Join historians Dr. David Townsend and Clif McDonald as they lead readers of this grimly absorbing book in a discussion of the 1942 battle for the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. The format for this 3-week course will be similar to a Book Discussion Group. Participants will each read the book and come to the sessions prepared to share with each other their responses to the book. Group discussion will include the history of WWII, the events of Bataan, and the aftermath of this tragedy. The Alamogordo Public Library Foundation will host the Normans in a Speaker Presentation to discuss their book. This class and the Speaker Presentation are designed to honor the memory of those 76,000 soldiers under American command who surrendered to their Japanese captors in April 1942. (3 sessions)
